Lol, welcome. Hey, can I join your server when it's up?
EDIT: Oh, here are a few things you should know:
If you're going for a regular, plain vanilla server, just make the map and upload.
If you're going for a hard core leveled server, expect only people who are daring (unless people play on hard more often then I think) to join.
If you want an economy server, get an economy pluggin. It might become hard w/o one.
Expect people to want stores, btw. Just saying that now.
For Role Playing servers, set up the story NOW!
EDIT: Oh, here are a few things you should know:
- If you don't want a vanilla server, then I'd suggest checking out the pluggins available.
- Notice: some things from pluggins (ex. Spleef) can actually be obtained w/o pluggins. Keep that in mind if you want games like that. They just need a bit of work.

It's actually pretty easy on a laptop. You need to buy a server from a host if your really serious about making a server for everyone. You OP yourself, finish the permissions, get a World Edit like plugin, and more. And that'd get your server going well.

That is, if you want a Bukkit Server. Bukkit servers' only purpose is to run pluggins along with the server to change the game in some way. Just getting a regular server file from the MC website would work just as well and you can still swap through the different gamemodes, after OPing yourself, and you can still play with friends.
